Government guidelines


Children and young people need to be active every day as part of play, physical education, games and sport in school, the family and the community. In supporting this, a number of guidelines have been established for children at both a State and Federal Government level.

Curriculum policy standards 
DET intranet only. New standards (pdf 93kb) stating that primary schools are to include 120 minutes of planned physical activity each week, inclusive of school sport, in Years 3 to 6.

Guidelines for the safe conduct of sport and physical activity in schools
This document was developed to inform and support school communities in planning and implementing safe sport and physical activity in NSW government schools.

DET intranet only. A government-endorsed approach that assists schools to determine the healthier types of foods for sale in their canteens.

Protection from the sun
DET intranet only. Schools have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for students and staff during physical activity and this responsibility includes the provision of protection from the sun.

Legislation on physical activity in schools
An extract (pdf 17.5kb) from the Schools Assistance (Learning Together – Achievement Through Choice and Opportunity) Act 2004, which specifies that schools need to provide at least two hours of activity each week.
