Munch and Move

Having a nutritious diet and being physically active are essential for healthy growth and development. Early childhood is the ideal time for children to develop and practice healthy eating and physical activity habits and to learn a range of movement skills that will help them more confidently take part in physical activity throughout their lives.

What is Munch and Move?

Munch and Move is a fun, games-based program for NSW preschools.  It supports the healthy development of young children by promoting physical activity, healthy eating and reduced small screen time (TV, DVD, computers).

  • Children will have the opportunity to engage in skills-based active play and learn about healthy choices through a range of learning experiences.
  • Parent focused support materials, including fact sheets will provide simple tips and ideas for practicing healthy, active behaviours at home.

The program is a joint initiative of the NSW Department of Health, the NSW Department of Community Services and The University of Sydney.

How can my pre-school benefit?

Participating preschools will receive training, information, resources and support. Munch and Move will support preschools to enhance and expand their existing program through a range of different learning experiences and skill-based games and activities.

The Munch and Move program offers:

  • Face-to-face training, conducted by the Early Childhood Training and Resource Centre (ECTARC), and practical resources to help incorporate active play and healthy eating activities as part of the learning experiences they provide to young children.
  • Information, ideas and resources for developing and implementing practical physical activity and healthy eating policies within the preschool.
  • Contact with local-level health professionals to provide additional advice to preschools to support the delivery of the program.
