The Live Life Well @ School

The Live Life Well @ School program is a joint initiative between the Department of Education and Training and NSW Health focusing on quality nutrition and physical education programs.

Why the Live Life Well @ School program?

Australian children are not as healthy as they should be. Many of them are putting on excess weight and not losing it as they get older. Over the last 20 years, rates of overweight and obesity in children have risen greatly in many countries around the world.

Obese children have a 25-50% chance of being obese as adults, and this chance may increase to around 75% for obese adolescents. The most recent data indicates that almost 25% of children in NSW are overweight or obese (NSW Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey 2004).

What's involved?

The Live Life Well @ School program provides opportunity for primary schools to work together in a series of professional learning workshops focussing on developing quality nutrition and physical education programs. The program aims is to get more students, more active, more often, as well as providing a renewed focus on healthy eating habits. The Live Life Well @ School program

involves schools exploring the teaching of fundamental movement skills and nutrition education as part of the PDHPE K-6 curriculum. Schools nominate a team of teachers to be involved in the project. School teams will develop and implement an action plan for initiating a sustainable change in PDHPE in the school context.

What's in it for our school?

  • Whole school change in teaching and learning in PDHPE which can be easily linked to the annual school report and or school management plan.
  • A renewed focus on PDHPE programs with an aim to improve the quality of teaching in physical education and nutrition education within the school.
  • Development of whole-school strategies to improve the wellbeing of students.
  • Increase opportunities for students to be more active, more often.
Schools participating in the Live Life Well @ School program will also receive a package to support them implement their action plan back at school. This includes:
  • A DVD copy of Get skilled: Get active.
  • Teaching and learning ideas for implementing quality physical education and nutrition education programs.
  • Access to a range of resources and programs such as Live Outside the Box and Crunch&Sip® programs.
  • Free coloured fact sheets for parents (translations available).
  • Access to local Area Health Service personnel to assist with supporting whole school initiatives and parent information in physical activity and nutrition.
