Nutrition in schools

Expecting teachers and canteen managers to become nutritionists – with everything else they have to do – is asking too much. This quick website guide gives practical suggestions on how schools can build good nutrition into daily activities.

Teaching ideas

School nutrition (Primary)
Classroom activity sheets on nutrition for each Stage, plus guidelines, resources and background information (NSW Dept of Education and Training).

Q4: Live Outside the Box (Primary and Secondary)
An obesity awareness program from Central Coast NSW, involving many local schools. Has a section for teachers.

Tooty Fruity Vegie Program (Primary)
Aims to increase children’s fruit and vegetable intake. Teacher guides for each Stage, plus other useful information (Northern Rivers Area Health Service).

Active-Ate (Primary)
Nutrition program aiming to decrease obesity, disease and tooth decay. Activities for Years K–7, with teacher factsheets (Qld Dept of Education and the Arts).

Online nutrition games (Primary)
Has games in which students click on food groups, etc. Colourful and interactive, but requires some reading skills or perhaps assistance (National Dairy Council, US).
