About YHunger

Pink record on turntable

The Yhunger living skills resource kit was originally developed in 2003 by the Sydney Local Health District for medium to long-term youth accommodation services.

From evaluation and further community research in 2010 and 2011, the new Yhunger kit was developed in collaboration with youth services and young people in the Sydney and South Western Sydney Local Health Districts.

The new kit has been available to NSW youth services from 2014 at free Yhunger workshops (see more details below).

The NSW Yhunger project aims to

  1. Develop living skills on food literacy with young people, experiencing or at risk of homelessness;
  2. Encourage youth services to provide, prepare and store nutritious food and drinks.
  3. Engage young people in regular physical activity options as part of service delivery.

The Yhunger Kit includes two cookbooks, Reheat: a cookbook for young people (PDF 9.5MB) (a new edition of the original Yhunger cookbook) and a new book titled Made Fresh: more mad feeds (PDF 14MB) featuring more culturally diverse flavours.

The Kit also contains ‘Tabletalk: 40+ ways to  work with young people on food and physical activity‘; and ‘Brainfood: 40+ fact sheets for young people on food & wellbeing’ that can be used on for case work or group work.

The kit is handed out in a pizza box to youth services across NSW at free Yhunger workshops run by Yfoundationsuntil 2016.
