Children’s participation in organised sport in NSW

In the 12 months leading up to April 2012, 538,900 children aged between 5 and 14 years participated in organised sport and physical activity in NSW.

  • This number makes up 60.2% of all children in NSW in this age group.
  • It is an increase of two percentage points from 2009.
  • A total of 308,500 (67.2%) boys and 230,400 (52.8%) girls took part in organised sport and physical activities.
  • However, if 'dancing' was included, the participation rates increased to 71.5% for boys and 63.5% for girls
  • On average, children spent five hours in the last school fortnight playing and training in organised sport outside of school hours.

The top sports and physical activities for children in NSW were:

  1. Soccer (outdoor) – 190,600 participants or a participation rate of 21.3%

  2. Swimming and diving – 163,400 participants or a participation rate of 18.2%

  3. Netball – 72,500 participants or a participation rate of 8.1%

  4. Tennis – 60,700 participants or a participation rate of 6.8%

  5. Rugby league – 59,300 participants or a participation rate of 6.6%

  6. Martial arts – 46,600 participants or a participation rate of 5.2%

  7. Basketball – 45,300 participants or a participation rate of 5.1%

  8. Cricket (outdoor) – 40,500 participants or a participation rate of 4.5%

  9. Gymnastics– 39,200 participants or a participation rate of 4.4%

  10. Athletics, track and field – 23,500 participants or a participation rate of 2.6%
